Pearl harbor day remembrance8/27/2023 “The Beacon lighting is a tribute to those individuals that lost their lives at Pearl Harbor,” remarked Earl “Chuck” Kohler, the last known remaining serviceman survivor in Contra Costa County. Afterwards, Frank Dorritie of Bugles Across America will perform “Taps.” At 5 PM, the Beacon will be lit. Then Catharine Baker, former State Assemblymember, will speak. Pearl Harbor survivors in attendance will be introduced by Wayne Korsinen, honorary member of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors.Ī performance of “God Bless the USA” by Erin Hegerty and guitar solo by Darren Brouestle will follow. Ted Clement, Executive Director of Save Mount Diablo Clint Elsholz, Acting Diablo Range District Superintendent for California State Parks and Robert Phelps, PhD, Executive Director of California State University, East Bay Concord Campus will then speak. The program begins with the posting of colors, pledge of allegiance, and national anthem. Viewing of the new USS Arizona exhibit at the CSUEB Concord Campus will be available from 3:00 PM to 3:45 PM as well as 45 minutes post ceremony. The ceremony will be held at the California State University, East Bay Concord Campus, at 4700 Ygnacio Valley Road in Concord. We invite you to attend the ceremony to pay tribute to the lives that were lost and honor our surviving veterans of Pearl Harbor. The Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, Chapter 5 are pleased to co-sponsor this 59th Annual National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Beacon Lighting Ceremony with Save Mount Diablo, California State Parks, and California State University, East Bay. The statue is 151 feet 1 inch (46.5 m) tall, with the pedestal and foundation adding another 154 feet (46.9 m).WALNUT CREEK, CA-On December 7th, Mount Diablo’s Beacon will be relit by a survivor of Pearl Harbor supported by a Save Mount Diablo team. It stands atop a rectangular stonework pedestal with a foundation in the shape of an irregular eleven-pointed star. The statue is made of a sheeting of pure copper, hung on a framework of with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf. The tablet bears the words “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI” (July 4, 1776), commemorating the date of the United States Declaration of Independence. The statue is of a female figure standing upright, dressed in a robe and a seven point spiked rays representing a nimbus (halo), holding a stone tablet close to her body in her left hand and a flaming torch high in her right hand. Ellis Island was reopened to the public in 1990 as the country’s primary museum devoted entirely to immigration. Nearly 12 million immigrants passed though neighboring Ellis Island. Japan’s surprise attack on America’s Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, just 80 years ago, was an attempt to stall the United States’ expected push back on Japan’s play to take over Southeast Asian energy resources as it divested itself from dependency on American resources. It was a bright Sunday morning which was darkened by the sudden attack on Pearl Harbor.
